Today’s stormwater programs are incredibly data intensive, ranging from inventory data to water-quality data to documentation of enforcement actions. Traditionally, data has been collected and documented in the field using a pen, paper, and camera. However, mobile technology including smartphones, smart GPS units, and customized applications are ready to revolutionize the way stormwater programs collect and manage field and GIS data. This presentation describes an intensive field effort—resulting from a large storm event and massive flooding in Tennessee in 2010—that motivated development of smartphone applications, and the subsequent evolution of those applications for municipal stormwater management.
