By: Scott Nania, StormCon Coordinator Comments

SWPPP - Do you have the appropriate qualifications and experience?

Do you have the appropriate earth science qualifications and site/construction experience to provide your clients with a National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permits and to identify a projects stormwater pollution prevention plan (SWPPP), including the Best Management Practices (BMPs)? If you are thinking about expanding your horizons and bettering your career, then get yourself up to speed on the regulations and the training for stormwater, erosion and sediment control compliance planning. Get the local certifications as a stormwater manager, erosion and sediment control specialist or inspector, and most importantly go to www.StormCon.com and find out how to get yourself certified.  Professional certifications that set the standard for your professional credentials will be presented at StormCon 2010 in San Antonio, Texas. Class work and exams for multiple national certifications will be available over a two-day time frame.

Be certain to make sure that your client is aware when they need NPDES coverage. Become invaluable to your clients by helping to ensure they are both covered and in compliance at all times.

The most common fines for construction projects are:

  1. Lack of coverage and appropriate filing.
  2. Lack of required weekly/precipitation event compliance reporting
  3. Not implementing the BMPs that are identified on the SWPPP.
  4. Not updating the SWPPPs as the construction project progresses.

Creating a plan and maintaining the paperwork including formal notifications, inspections and documentation, is central to maintaining compliance and avoiding liability. Compliance is a business opportunity and as well as a necessity.
